The full story

Putting the patient at the centre of the model

Reine is the founder and clinical director of The Health Lodge, and has spent her career building a collaborative model of care between doctors, naturopaths and the wider health team.

Reine began in the fitness industry and quickly recognised there was more to health than exercise and movement. She started studying naturopathy in 1995, graduating from Endeavor college in Brisbane in 1998, drawn to understanding health through a systems medicine lens.

When she moved to the Byron Bay region in 1999, she wrote to every local doctor proposing that doctors and naturopaths work together and that is where her combined consultations frameword began: joining patients in their appointments with their doctor, specialist, psychologist or physiotherapist so that nobody had to relay findings from one practitioner to the next.

She has since built working relationships with psychologists, osteopaths, acupuncturists and nurses, and has taught this integrative model through ACIIDS, ACNEM and the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association.

  1. Areas of focus

    Complex Chronic Health

People come to Reine with conditions such as MCAS, POTS and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, ADHD, cardiovascular concerns and gut conditions like SIBO. Most have already seen many practitioners and are looking for someone who can assess and support every aspect of their condition. These presentations sit at the intersection of the gut, hormones, immune system and nervous system, so Reine assesses all four, alongside a detailed history and, where useful, a genetic profile to understand predisposition.

Common symptoms or presentations I assist with

    • Persistent insomnia
    • Chronic pain
    • Frequent infections
    • Chronic Fatigue
    • PTSD
    • PMDD

In complex chronic health Reine always works with a doctor and a nurse, and often with a psychologist or hypnotherapist.

  2. Areas of focus

    Hormones

Hormones have long been poorly understood, and the last five to ten years have brought valuable new insight, including bioidentical hormones and the herbs and nutrients that support them. Reine looks at the thyroid in depth (not just TSH, but T3 and T4) and always assesses the adrenals, given the close relationship between the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenals. She works with people through major transitions: the teenage years, postnatal, perimenopause and menopause. Gut health, SIBO, movement history and diet all shape the hormonal picture and are assessed together.

Common symptoms or presentations I assist with

    • Hair loss
    • Skin conditions such as acne
    • Insomnia
    • Mood disorders such as PMDD
    • Loss of interest in life
    • Low libido

Reine usually works with an integrative doctor, using herbs, diet and lifestyle, and at times IV vitamin C. She often brings in a psychologist, as mental health is central for many of these patients.

  3. Areas of focus

    Immune Health

The immune system has fascinated Reine since the start of her career, beginning with allergies, an area she sees as widely misunderstood. It encompasses MCAS, POTS, post-viral syndrome and most autoimmune conditions, including endometriosis and rheumatoid arthritis. She uses comprehensive functional blood testing to look at the immune system from several angles, including the NutraStat panel of metabolites, nutrient markers and heavy metals, to find the drivers undermining immunity. Food sensitivities are commonly underdiagnosed here, and for POTS she will often run a NASA lean test.

Common symptoms or presentations I assist with

    • Frequent colds and flu
    • Seasonal allergies
    • Fatigue
    • Pain
    • Weight gain
    • Food sensitivities

Reine always uses IV vitamins in this area and works with an integrative doctor, and often an immunologist. She also works with our osteopaths on structural and vascular factors, and with a myofunctional and biological dentist, as airway issues are common.

How it works

Your first appointments with Reine

  1. 1. Clinical intake. You'll first see one of Reine's naturopaths, Maddie or Brooke, for a comprehensive 45-minute session to gather your full history and all past pathology.
  2. 2. Case Review. After your intake, Maddie or Brooke sits down with Reine to decide whether any testing is needed before your appointment.
  3. 3. Consultation with Reine. Your appointment with Reine is then booked, with Maddie or Brooke sitting in, so you're all working through your history and current findings together.
  4. 4. Hypothesis and plan. By the end of the session Reine will have a hypothesis on the drivers. If further evidence is needed to confirm it, that's discussed, and a plan and direction are set.

Retreats

Medical retreat program

Integrative Medical Retreat for Complex Chronic Health

For patients whose progress has been slow, with years passing and little relief. Over five or ten days the team works in real time, adjusting treatment as we go rather than trialling something and waiting four weeks to assess it.

The first five days are diagnostic, building an understanding of you from a physical, psychological, biochemical, hormonal and digestive perspective. The second five days are integrative: treatments are applied in the right order, with space to absorb the findings and plan your ongoing care. You'll leave with an exit report and follow-up appointments, so nothing is lost.

More about Reine

Frequently asked questions

I aim to understand all of the factors involved in someone's health, gather evidence for my theory, and treat in order of the hierarchy. Too often we treat secondary symptoms without identifying the primary driver. When you treat at the level of the primary driver, the secondary symptoms tend to resolve quite naturally.

Each week I facilitate a one-hour whole-team meeting where 15 to 20 practitioners collaborate on patient care. Through Southern Cross University I have published two research papers: one on the patient's experience of the integrative model of care, and one on the practitioner's experience. I also lecture, and have taught the integrative model through ACNEM, the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association and naturopathic groups.

I'm a generalist and see all age groups and both sexes: prenatal and postnatal, children, teenagers, adults and older people.

I have a strong network of integrative specialists. If I have a clear hypothesis and I'm not seeing the results I expect, I bring in a specialist with deeper knowledge: a gastroenterologist for the digestive system, an immunologist for the immune system, or a gynaecologist for hormones.
